What is Airsoft?

Airsoft is a safe recreational combat game that involves the use of Airsoft guns and gear. Airsoft guns are commonly made from the same or similar molds of real guns which give them the look and feel of real of guns. Airsoft guns shoot 6mm plastic BB's at a velocity starting at about 200 feet per second or FPS. The most common types of Airsoft guns are AEG's, otherwise known as Automatic Electric Guns. These guns have an internal battery powered gearbox that is piston driven and shoots the BB's. Just like real guns, Airsoft guns use magazines for ammunition storage and to feed the gun. There are several different types of magazines including standard, real capacity, mid capacity, and high capacity. Standard magazines are non winding mags which can hold anywhere from 100 - 170 rounds, where as real capacity magazines hold the same number of rounds that the real guns they are modeled after too. Additionally, mid capacity magazines hold between 70 - 190 rounds, where high capacity magazines usually hold 190+ rounds and have a wheel on the bottom of the mag that you wind to feed the BB's. All Airsoft guns should have an orange tip on the end to identify them as Airsoft guns, as opposed to real guns.

When playing Airsoft it is imperative that you use proper safety protection including goggles. Properly rated ANSI full seal safety goggles are ideal for Airsoft games along with mouth protection that covers teeth. Airsoft BB bullets can shatter or chip a tooth when hit.

Unlike Paintball, Airsoft BB's do not leave any visible markings on clothes or gear. Most Airsoft games are played based on the honor system and therefore commonly attracts a professional crowd.

Most Airsoft games are conducted in wooded areas, but some sanctioned fields are located indoors for close quarters battles. Many Airsoft players choose to wear camouflage when in the field and will commonly wear tactical vests to carry extra gear such as magazines, batteries, water, and extra bb's, and more.
