While most airsoft guns are electrically powered, gas powered rifles are gaining more momentum. One of the benefits of many gas rifles is there realistic operation compared to their real world counterparts. Many of these rifles will have slight recoil, a reciprocating bolt, a functioning charging handle and functioning bolt release. For training purposes, there is nothing that comes closer. With the increased functionality comes limitations. Since they are gas powered, they are more sensitive to temperature changes. Green gas, which is the most common propellant is typically unreliable below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. CO2 propellant will work in colder temperatures, usually down to about 30 degrees. HPA is unaffected by the temperature drops but requires you to carry an external tank with a remote line to the airsoft gun. With the extra moving parts of the rifle in gas blowback variants, there is substantially more maintenance involved when compared to a traditional electric or spring powered airsoft guns. The guns will need to be thoroughly cleaned after each use and have the gas seals adequately lubricated to ensure they continue to function properly. If you’re up for the challenge, these can be very rewarding in the field to play with.
If you go this route, consider adding an airsoft handgun to your loadout. This will give you a very realistic back up gun which is essential when carrying less BBs than the AEG counter parts.
Q: I’m a new player, do you recommend a gas gun for me?
A: Most gas rifles are not ideal for a new player due to the complex maintenance of the guns. There are some exceptions to this such as the TAC 6 Airsoft Rifle. This is a very simple and reliable design that is an excellent choice for beginners. For more beginner rifle suggestions, make sure to check out the Starter Kits Section on our website
Q: What is better, green gas or CO2?
A: There are advantages and disadvantages to both. CO2 has gained popularity in recent years, primarily due to the easy access of 12 gram CO2 cartridges. One thing to consider when using these cartridges is that you will need to lubricate your magazine with an airsoft grade lubricant over time. The cartridges themselves have no lubricant. We recommend a 100% silicone oil.
Q: How do I clean my gas airsoft gun?
A: First start with the barrel. Use a 100% silicone oil / spray on a cloth, run this down the barrel a few times to collect any dust / debris that has accumulated on the barrel. After this is compete, use a complete dry cloth and run down the barrel multiple times to ensure the barrel is completely dry. You don’t want leave additional residue in there which will collect debris over time.
Second, lube your magazine. Put a small drop of 100% silicone oil on the fill valve where your CO2 cartridge will go in before you fill it net time (no need to do this if the rifle is green gas, green gas has lubricant inside).

Gas rifles/SMGs are airsoft guns powered by pressurized air, usually green gas or CO2. Their function can vary greatly from simple to realistic. One thing that is a common theme among all gas powered airsoft guns is doing the proper upkeep and using quality propellant to keep things running smoothly.
Q: What gas gun is good for a beginner?
A: If you don't mind playing sniper class, an ASG Tac 6 is a very inexpensive way to get a taste for gas guns and sniping at the same time.
Q: Would you recommend any other gas gun for beginners?
A: Honestly, not so much. Gas guns can be temperamental and require some knowledge of maintenance and function to keep them running just right. As such, beginners often fail to grasp the concept of lubricating the moving parts and seals and the overall cost and upkeep of a gas airsoft gun that can lead to malfunctions or a short lifespan. This often leads to discouragement as well.
Q: What needs to be looked after in a gas gun?
A: Gas guns, especially blowbacks, need more attention to the moving parts and seals. Especially with guns capable of full auto or ones with moving components like bolts or slides, these parts make contact with other metal parts which do fatigue and wear out over time. Often times this will need more lubrication or outright part replacement when the component wears out or fails. Other components that should be looked at from time to time are any rubber components such as o-rings and seals. These are what are responsible for the gas being stored and when they get old they can get leaky. Using the right type of lube ensures that the seals never get dry and crack. Rubber seals are affected by temperature as well so places with extreme shifts cause cause your airsoft gun to dry out. Even if the gun is new and you don't use it for a while, this can still require lube. This is a fact that you can't change.
Q: What are the benefits of using a gas airsoft gun?
A: This is just one more possible source of power, especially on the long guns, when batteries just aren't your thing. Gas guns can shoot pretty hard without any effort just because the gasses perform so well when the weather is warmer or even hot. Some of the more realistic models can be incredibly fun due to the function and sometimes recoil associated with them.
Q: How much does it cost to operate a gas rifle?
A: If it's a non-blowback design, it will have the same efficiency as a non-blowback pistol which is really really excellent. One CO2 capsule on a non-blowback rifle is good for around 100 shots. If you are using a gas-blowback rifle or SMG however, your mileage may vary. Another important factor to consider: how quickly you are shooting. Gas guns can suffer from cooldown if fired too rapidly over a short period of time. Guns that have been shot rapidly to the point of having the gun and magazines suffer from cooldown will make you experience sluggish performance or incomplete cycling of the gun.
