The AK74 assault rifle was developed in the Soviet Union in the early 1970's as a replecement fro the AKM assault rifle. The biggest difference between the AK74 and it's predecessor is that it is chambered for the 5.45x39mm intermediate round instead of the 7.62x39mm round. The AK74 first saw service with Soviet forces in the 1979-1989 Afghanistan conflict. Presently, the rifle continues to serve as the standard issue service rifle in many former USSR member nations. The AKS74U variant of the AK74 family was developed and released in 1979. Featureing a shortened barrel, the AKS74U was intedned for use mainly by special forces, airborne infantry, rear-echelon support units, and armored vehicle crews.
