Airsoft batteries are what we use to power our automatic electric airsoft guns (AEGs). A good battery is the heart of a great AEG. Consistent performance and the length of the time that the battery lasts is all dependent on the quality of the battery you use. There are 2 primary types of airsoft batteries that are used in airsoft guns: NiMH and LIPO. We'll go over each type in detail to give you more information and the pros and cons below:
NiMH is short for Nickle Metal Hydride. This is a rechargeable battery that is very robust for airsoft applications. They do well for high drain applications that airsoft guns require more so than a NiCD battery. In the early days of airsoft, NiCD batteries were the standard. While you can still run an airsoft gun off of a NiCD battery, the advantages of a NiMH far outweigh anything a NiCD has to offer which has made NiCD batteries obsolete. The NiMH has a much higher battery capacity than a NiCD, does not have cell memory problems which makes it simple and reliable. The NiMH batteries we sell have an average life cycle of over 100 charges. For the average airsoft player this equates to over 2 years of active use of the battery.
Pros:
Cons:
LIPO is short for lithium polymer. LIPO batteries have become very popular in the last few years in airsoft. People like to use them for their high energy density packed in a very small package. The use of LIPO batteries have allowed many players to run M4 style airsoft guns efficiently while keeping their rifles true to their real firearm counterparts. NiMH batteries would not easily fit into the small storage locations available on these models. This technology has also allowed new airsoft gun designs to be feasible such as the Scorpion EVO. A gun like this would simply not be able to house a NiMH battery anywhere in the compact size. It is important to note that these batteries due have some key limitations. They are required to use a special balancing charger due to the volatility of the cells. Also, if overly discharged they lose the ability to hold a charge and are effectively dead at this point. For these reasons we DO NOT recommend using these batteries if you are a beginner at airsoft.
Pros:
Cons:
Q: I'm a beginner at Airsoft, should I use a LIPO Battery?
A: No. We do not recommend LIPO batteries for beginners at airsoft
Q: How long will my battery last?
A: This depends on how you use your airsoft gun. A good rule of thumb: your battery rating in MAh = the number of shots you can get out of the battery. A 1,500 MAh battery = 1,500 shots
