Gearboxes inside automatic electric guns (AEGs) will have either bearings or bushings, or a combination of both installed. These act as the surface in which the gear axles rotate on. They can be made of plastic or some sort of alloy metal, though for a quality airsoft gun made to last for a while these will have metal gearboxes with metal bearings or bushings over plastic ones. Bushings are replaceable components and are simple compared to bearings. Bushings will be more durable than bearings due to having no moving parts. This is especially more evident when a satellite component fails that would otherwise tweak or put undue stress on bearings. Upgrading one component to something stronger is going to create a domino effect. The next weakest component is what you should pay attention next. Just remember that the less moving parts there are, the simpler it is. For those airsoft techs who prefer durability over anything else, bushings are an essential. Installing bushings or bearings requires shimming gears with each install. We offer tech services to help upgrade and repair most common airsoft gun types.
Q: What size bushings do I get?
A: Your gearbox dictates what kind of bushings you would have to get. If your gearbox has 6mm bushings/bearings then you can only and should only get that exact type to replace or upgrade it with. Bearings and bushings can be had from 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, and 9mm configurations with a few strange ones in between depending on the type of AEG you have.
Q: How long do bushings last?
A: Bushings should last indefinitely or tens of thousands of rounds in optimal conditions. These are not prone to damage from compression jams, misshaped or damaged gears, and other things that would otherwise affect bearings. Bushings could wear out from the constant friction from the gear axles it experiences in normal operation and should be replaced when gears exhibit visible slop.
Q: How do bushings fail? How can I prevent them from failing?
A: A bushing can fail over time by being worn out to where the hole is egg shaped. This introduces enough slop in the gear alignment that it could potentially cause more friction, bind the gears, or even break the gears. Bushings are more durable than bearings by a long shot and should only need to be replaced when you see the slop in fitment. If your bushings are made of plastic or a soft alloy such as copper, you should look into upgrading to bushings made of stronger alloys such as steel to increase your AEG's longevity.
Q: What upgrades exist for the bushings?
A: If your airsoft gun already has bushings in the gearbox, you could upgrade to bushings made from better materials. Your only other choice for upgrades is if you want to reduce friction, which means you could change over to bearings.
Q: What is shimming?
A: Bushings and bearings need to fit inside the gearbox in a way that allows the gears to turn with the least amount of friction possible. Shimming is the act of fine tuning gear placement within the tolerances of the gearbox using tiny shims which appear as paper thin metal discs. AEGs that are not shimmed appropriately will become electrical inefficient and experience more undue wear and tear on the gears.
