The selector plate is a component that is on the gearbox that interacts with the external selector lever of the gun to provide the safe, semi-auto, and other firing positions that your airsoft gun may have. The gearbox in an AEG (airsoft electric gun) is often classified by gearbox types which is the form factor in which the internal parts reside. The gearbox type itself has no bearing on what version is the newest or best, but more the type of airsoft guns it might be designed for. If you are having trouble with your fire modes the selector plate could be at fault though it would be rare. More than likely it could be your cut-off lever or other gearbox components.
If you are not sure or require an experienced airsoft tech to work on your popular airsoft gun, we offer tech services. Selector plates are specific to airsoft gun makes and models so its best to consult experienced airsoft techs if you are shopping for this component. Though gearbox type and gun type might be enough to get you the right item, the specifications and tolerances as well as design choices vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and the fitment is not guaranteed at all. The selector plate often looks like a plastic or metal piece with shapes cut out to interact with gears and levers to be manipulated by the external lever that you control from outside of the gun. It may or may not have a metal piece on it which continues the circuit from the switch assembly. If your AEG's switch assembly continues its circuit through the selector plate, that contact must be there. If the switch assembly continues straight to the motor and bypasses the selector plate, the contact is omitted or can be left on with no consequence.

Q: Do selector plates go bad?
A: This is a part that sees no stress and should not go bad whether metal or plastic unless it does not engage the cut off lever properly.
Q: Does the selector plate need to be upgraded?
A: This component rarely fails if at all and as such there is no true upgrades. They either work or they do not. You will often see the parts more as replacements or for those building an AEG gearbox from scratch. Tolerances in design of the AEG body, external and internal selector parts, and the interaction with the plate could all vary greatly and require much patience to work and fit to make sure your AEG has all its proper firing modes, especially safe. Do note that guns with ambidextrous controls will have more complexity and reinstalling the gearbox carefully while not damaging the selector plate is crucial to your gun functioning properly.
Q: Can I make my non ambidextrous airsoft gun have ambidextrous selectors?
A: More than likely not, unless it is within the same brand of airsoft gun and model and with all the required conversion parts. If you desire an airsoft gun with ambidextrous selectors, it is better to get a gun that already features it.
