The gearbox in an automatic electric gun (AEG) has a spring inside that is responsible for forcing the piston forward. The amount of force this spring exerts on the piston in conjunction with the air pressure created inside the cylinder will result in the power it puts behind the BB to propel it. The resultant velocity with which the BB travels out of the barrel is measured in fps (feet per second), MPS (meters per second), or joules (energy). Changing your spring to one with a different level of tension will have coarse changes in FPS and is the first place to start when you want to tune your gearbox and upgrade or downgrade your airsoft gun's velocity. AEG springs are pretty much universal and the rating is pretty much universal as well. The results you will get will vary based on your gun's barrel length and cylinder setup in addition to variances in the manufacturing of the springs. Spring manufacturers have different naming conventions so your results will vary with what is claimed on the package. Some will go by a claimed feet per second, some are meters per second, and some will have a number with a percentage rating, indicating how much more power over stock the spring is. This last naming convention is the most confusing label as it does not take into account the gun's barrel length and cylinder setup or what is the accepted "stock" velocity to base the entire rating off of. To change springs, a complete disassembly is required.
To change the spring on an AEG equipped with a quick change spring guide, you need to disassemble to the point where you can access the back of the gearbox. We work on most popular AEG types and offer tech services if needed. AEG springs have different coil styles too. A standard coil spring will look uniform all the way through and will provide the exact same amount of tension regardless of how compressed or not the spring is. The other type is called an irregular pitch spring and will have some sections of the spring where the coils are closer together and some sections where they are not. The idea is to make it more efficient and easy for the motor to pull if the spring is at the later part of the cycle (pre-compressed), which is sometimes harder to overcome for a motor pulling a conventional spring. This means more draw from a battery. Both spring types will function and not having a particular type will not make or break your gearbox performance by any meaningful degree.

Q:How long do springs last? A: AEG springs can last for tens of thousands of rounds before the springs begin to fatigue and stop hitting as hard as they once did.
The spring wearing out will not do anything to stop the function of your gun but your gun will shoot a lower velocity. Replace the
spring periodically with a fresh one to restore your gun's performance. A proper upgrade spring should be heat treated so that they do
not break prematurely and lose tension as quickly over time. Leaving your spring compressed dramatically decreases its life and will
lower your FPS. Be sure to fire a few rounds on semi auto before putting the gun away in storage to prevent the piston from being
stored compressed.
