Magazines for M4 style airsoft guns come in two flavors these days: mid capacity and high capacity. It is likely that your airsoft gun will come with a high capacity magazine for you to start with though sometimes it may come with a mid capacity magazine by default so this is not a hard and fast rule. There is also such a thing as a low capacity magazine which is a thing of the past but worth mentioning. Mid capacity magazines function like real firearm magazines in that it uses a piece in the magazine known as a follower to push the ammunition up into the gun which is forced up by a spring. This holds less BBs but these magazines do not make noise like a high capacity magazine and they provide reliable consistent feeding until you are empty. This is in stark contrast to the airsoft high cap magazine which functions like a big hopper. Inside a high cap mag, the whole magazine body is hollow to hold many BBs and the feeding is done by providing tension to the winding mechanism. You wind the wheel at the bottom of the magazine which will provide spring tension to the feed mechanism which will pull up and feed as many BBs as it can while there is spring tension. Once this tension is expended, you wind it up again and it is ready to use as long as you have more ammo. Though you get to carry more ammo in the magazine, the noise made during movement of the BBs moving around inside the magazine can be a deal breaker for some players. It should be noted that mid capacity magazines that advertise near high cap mag levels of capacity do so using heavy spring tension that could cause issues on their own when fully loaded. Your magazine choice is entirely up to you and should depend on your preferences. There is nothing in the book that says using a mid capacity magazine makes you a pro any more than using a high capacity magazine makes you a "noob".

Q: What do I need to use a mid capacity magazine? A: You will need BBs and a BB loading tool. BB loaders come in all shapes and sizes and work in different ways to do the
same thing and it will be entirely up to you which kind to get. Mid capacity magazines should be lubricated every so
often and especially before using the first time to ensure proper function. Magazines should be kept clean and free of
debris as well. Q: What is better? Mid caps or high caps? A: That is an entirely subjective topic and is entirely up to what the player's priorities are. From a performance standpoint,
both types of magazines work about as well for their intended purposes. The only thing that might give mid capacity
magazines a performance edge would be when it comes to feeding guns that are upgraded for higher than normal rates of
fire (30 rounds per second and up). Almost all guns fall below that in stock form so mid capacity or high capacity magazines
will work just fine to "keep up" with the gun. If a magazine does not feed properly when pushed to those limits, it might not
be a fault of the magazine but rather beyond the limits of what a magazine should do without serious thought and redesign.
