Electric airsoft guns use rechargeable batteries as their primary source of power. The battery gives power to the electric motor which drives a piston back and forth to make the gun operate smoothly.
A quality battery is an essential piece of equipment that allows your airsoft gun to operate smoothly and consistently. There are 2 primary types of batteries used in airsoft - NiMH and LIPO. NiMH is the most simple and reliable. With a NiMH battery you can simply plug it into a smart charger and run it until the gun begins to slow down without causing any damage to the battery. These batteries are typically larger and heavier vs LIPO batteries, and they don't have as large a capacity of energy vs. the size. Due to the simplicity of use and reliability we recommend these for all beginner airsoft players. This is the same type of battery that we use in our fleet of rental guns at our airsoft fields. LIPO batteries pack a large punch in a smaller size. With the higher energy density, comes other items that need to be considered. When a LIPO battery is discharged below a certain voltage, it will not be able to be recharged and is effectively dead. Due to this, some guns are now incorporating voltage monitors in their fire control units which help to protect these batteries. It is important to note that MOST airsoft guns do not have this feature and it is up to the user to avoid overly discharging the battery. They also require special chargers that balance the cells as you are charging to maintain the health of the battery. Due to these reasons we only recommend LIPO batteries to experienced airsoft players who thoroughly understand the limitations of the batteries.
Equally important with a quality battery is a quality charger. Airsoft guns that have chargers included are typically standard wall chargers that provide no overcharge protection. A smart charger will automatically shut off the flow of energy to the battery once it reaches the peak voltage. A smart charger is a necessity to have with your equipment. This is why we include one with every airsoft gun starter kit that we offer.
Q: Do I really need to get a smart charger for my airsoft gun?
A: Yes! A smart charger is the first accessory you should purchase when you buy a new airsoft gun. This will allow you to charge your battery faster and protect it from overcharging
Q: Should I use a LIPO battery?
A: This depends on your experience level and understanding of airsoft batteries. If you are a new player, we DO NOT recommend using a LIPO battery. If you've been playing a while and understand the limitations of LIPO batteries, then this may be a good option. Remember that you will need a LIPO specific charger to balance the cells when charging
Q: Are the batteries that come in starter kits good?
A: Yes! We include a high quality battery and charger in the starter kits so that you can enjoy using your airsoft gun
