Like any other piece of mechanical equipment or real guns even, airsoft guns must be maintained by cleaning and lubricating properly at recommended intervals. We carry all the essential lubricants and greases to service many types of guns you might have for you DIYers. Let's break down the types of oils and greases you can use and for what components:
Gas Guns - Silicone Oil
Use silicone oil on the slide rails, hammer assembly, nozzle, and the magazine, barrel, and bucking. To lubricate the magazine you can put some oil on the fill valve and then charge it with a little gas to force it in. The pressure inside the magazine from the gas will distribute the oil into all the vital rubber seals and components. If you are more technically proficient, you can disassemble the magazine and directly lubricate these components. To lubricate the bucking, shoot some silicone oil onto a q-tip and lightly dab the oil onto the bucking, or shoot it directly into the hopup chamber and wipe out the excess. This is a must for gas powered airsoft pistols.
AEGs - Silicone Oil
Use silicone oil on the hop up bucking and to clean the barrel of your electric airsoft gun. This is all you should be doing as a beginner and it does not require you to take apart and put together a gun again.
AEG Internals - Grease
If you are going into the gearbox for whatever reason, there are a few different chemicals used in here. The components you need to lubricate would be the gears, piston body, and the piston o-ring. These all require something a bit heavier than silicone oil. We have a few special greases listed to match these components to make it easier. But some sort of PTFE or synthetic grease is good here.
Spring Sniper Rifles - Silicone Oil
Lubricate the hopup bucking of your airsoft sniper rifle the same way you would do for AEGs.
Q: I have WD-40, can I use that?
A: NO! WD-40 and similar products contain petroleum which damages and deteriorates the grade of O-rings specially designed for use in airsoft guns. Use of these chemicals or gun cleaning chemicals (which are typically solvents) will ruin your airsoft gun and void your warranty.
Q: How frequently should I lubricate my airsoft gun
A: Typically after every time you play or couple of times you should lubricate your airsoft gun to keep it running well. If you live in a dry environment or play outdoors where your gun can get dirty, we recommend doing this after every game day. If your gun has a tight bore barrel you should clean every single time just to prevent jamming issues that can arise which could lead to expensive damage if not treated correctly.
Q: What do I use to clean my gun?
A: Start with the cleaning/unjamming rod included with your gun and 100% pure silicone oil. Make a small square of about 1-2 inches with a paper towel and put it through the loop side of the cleaning/unjamming rod. Spray the paper towel with silicone oil. Run the rod into the barrel until you feel it stop. If it stops do not force it further, you could damage the hopup unit/bucking/or your rod. Do one or two passes and then replace the square of paper towel with a fresh one, spritz it with oil again and repeat. Keep doing this until the paper towel comes out pretty much clean. Finish with one final paper towel patch, this time dry with no oil. This will clean out the excess oils in the barrel and prevent things like dirt and other debris from clinging to the excess oils.
