M4 magazines are the most popular, but there are many other magazines available for other unique models of airsoft guns. Whenever you're selecting an electric airsoft rifle, you want to make sure that there are spare airsoft gun magazines readily available. Spare magazines are the most common accessory used when owning an airsoft gun. There are 2 basic types of magazines, mid capacity and high capacity. High capacity magazines have a reservoir to house BBs, and then use a winding mechanism to build spring tension and feed roughly 50 BBs at a time. At the completion of feeding those BBs, you'll need to wind the spring tension again to feed the next set of BBs. A mid capacity magazine is fed by simple spring tension. They hold less, but once loaded will feed all of the BBs in the magazine without any additional winding. Something to note if using a mid capacity magazine, you'll need to have a speed loader to effectively load all the magazines.
Something that is becoming more popular in the market are magazine repair kits. These are especially popular for gas rifle and pistol magazines. Since the magazine cost per unit is so high, it may make sense for you to simply purchase a kit and extend the life of the magazine. Included in these magazines can be feed lips, springs with followers, as well as the gas valves that eventually need replacing. Remember that you can extend the life of your existing magazines by putting in a little time and effort into cleaning them and maintaining them. For gas magazines, ensure that you clean out all excess debris and dirt from the magazine and give special attention to any moving parts. Also ensure that you add 100% silicone oil in order to keep the seals properly lubed. This step is especially important if you live in an extra dry climate where the seals are prone to fail faster. For magazines that are not gas powered, it is important to clean off extra debris as it can affect the feeding of the magazine. High capacity magazines depend on the series of gears and spring tension for them to work successfully. Occasionally small grains of sand can work their way into the gears which jam the magazines and make it non functional. To keep this from happening, or to repair the magazine you can simply take out the inner workings from the shell and inspect the gears looking for any piece of debris that is in the way. You can use something small to clean the teeth if something is embedded. This can be done with something as simple as a paper clip or something more precise such as a hobby knife.
