In airsoft the sky is the limit when it comes to mimicking cool weaponry that exists in the real world and that is certainly not limited when it comes to attachments. Grenade launchers are also a cool item to have in airsoft.
Q: Do airsoft grenades actually explode?
A: For the rounds used in an airsoft grenade launcher, no they do not literally explode. The shells used in launchers will be gas powered and there are different functioning types out there. Some shoot a bunch of BBs out at the same time much like a shotgun blast, some shoot a stream of BBs, some can shoot paintballs, and some can be used to launch a foam rocket.
Q: How far is the range of these shells?
A: The ones that shoot BBs tends to be shorter range, under 50 feet or so. The ones that shoot rockets tend to go 200 feet or more.
Q: Where can I use these grenade launchers?
A: Wherever they will allow it. Some fields may opt not to allow the use of airsoft grenade launchers/grenades due to noise restrictions or it is their preference for their rule sets.
Q: Do I need a launcher to use these shells?
A: These gas grenade shells will have a release valve that is depressed by the launcher. A handy trick we've learned over the years was that you could hand activate these grenade shells without a launcher simply by pressing the release with your bare hand. It works!
Q: You mentioned these can be loud, how loud are we talking?
A: Airsoft grenades can be startling so you can say the loud pop that these grenades make are definitely loud. If used in close quarters or indoors it gets even louder, but nowhere near as loud as a real gunshot or something. Do exercise care and consideration of others and don't pop one off next to someone's ear or it will be ringing!
Q: If most of these grenades don't function like an exploding grenade, then why get one?
A: Different types of airsoft weapons can give you distinct advantages over your opponents. Do you need to clear out a group of people in one shot? Are you planning on entering a room where you might certainly have an ambush waiting for you? The use of airsoft grenades could be a force multiplier if you use them correctly.
Q: I know I want one now! Where do I beging?
A: If you decided to get into running airsoft grenades and launchers, you'll have to explore how to mount a launcher onto your gun. Rail mounted launchers are certainly the easiest solution though there is a lot of support for the M4/M16 family of weapons.
Q: Is there any maintenance for airsoft grenades?
A: Keep in mind that airsoft shells are very much like gas gun magazines and require lubrication to remain leak free. DO NOT DISASSEMBLE the grenade as there are small parts and tiny bearings to lose. Add lubrication to the fill valve as you charge the grenade with gas and you should enjoy a lot of life out of your grenades.
