Leg rigs are a piece of tactical gear you can wear off of your belt that straps onto your leg. These will have pouches or MOLLE webbing to allow you to customize what you are carrying on your leg. Using a leg rig with MOLLE webbing, you can take advantage of a modular leg platform by putting extra pouches specifically designed for your gun, various pouches to suit your mission, or to hold extra grenades where you can easily grab them.
Sometimes wearing vests and plate carriers might be sufficient or you may want to separate your loadout to be a little more flexible or carry a bit more ammo into battle. This is where the leg rigs would be a great addition to your kit.
The blessing and the curse of MOLLE gear is the limitless possibilities for your setups and the ability to adapt based on one platform but the curse is the fact that you will probably be tinkering with your loadout to find your optimal setup for a given situation. We find it to be a love/hate relationship because when you play for a bit you're always trying to make things more convenient and more accessible so you can get faster reload times and fumble with your gear less. With modular gear you aren't married to a particular arrangement of pouches so you don't have to start over if you want to make a minor change.
From an organization standpoint, having separate places to put your magazines for various weapon platforms can be handy. You can keep your closed top pouches on your vest or leg rig and have open top (quick access pouches) for a few of your magazines. That way you can have your quick reloads but have extra secure pouches for the longer run scenarios where you are concerned and do not want to lose your spare magazines while running around.
Q: I'm still having trouble picturing it. What could go on a leg rig?
A: Typically they hang off your belt and have a strap or two to secure around your leg.
Q: Are they heavy?
A: The leg rig platforms by themselves are heavy, but the modular ones once loaded up can add a little weight. You have to take into account the amount of pouches and accessories you are trying to load up on.
Q: Will these work for left-handed people?
A: Of course. The modular ones are setup the ones you want and the ones with prebuilt pouches are typically symmetrically designed.
Q: Would you recommend this over a vest?
A: For people who want more freedom of movement, they often opt out of vests or move to a chest rig type setup. The leg platform could hold some ammo but not as much as being loaded on the front of a vest.
