The anti reversal latch is a component inside the gearbox that prevents the gears from turning the wrong way after completing a shot. The anti reversal latch interacts with the bevel gear which has numerous direction teeth that act as stops built in. These allow the gear to turn one direction unobstructed but if the gear direction is reversed for any reason, the sprung anti reversal latch will stop the gear from turning the other way. spring is the ever present force that pushes the piston forward and the spur gear which drives the piston is also what holds it in places with the help of the anti reversal latch stopping the bevel gear from turning. Without it, the piston will always be stopped at the forward position when it otherwise should not. Though there is nothing inherently bad about the piston going forward every time you let go of the trigger, the timing of the piston in relation everything else is crucial for proper feeding and shooting. An indicator of a bad or broken anti reversal latch or the anti reversal latch spring would be the gun releasing the spring well after you have finished your cycle, which sounds like an understated whir. That noise is your piston not making it to full travel but rather than stopping where it should for the next shot, it is decompressing without locking the piston in place. Replacing the anti reversal latch requires opening up the gearbox to install. We offer tech services if you need that level of help.
Q: How long does an anti reversal latch last?
A: Anti reversal latches typically last tens of thousands of rounds and will wear over through use. This component is to be replaced as necessary over time and issues with regard to this part out of the box are rarely encountered if at all.
Q: How do anti reversal latches break?
A: The latch itself either gets worn down and does not catch the bevel gear properly or the shaft itself can break. The spring that moves this latch to the correct postion could lose its tension or possibly (though rarely) snap. This is a very straight forward part so you just need to replace it when it goes out.
Q: Are there upgrades for the anti reversal latch? Do I need to upgrade the anti reversal latch?
A: Though the OEM ones are typically very strong, there exists upgrades that might be made of steel or stronger materials. This part should move freely in its track otherwise minor fitting may be required, though this should be a drop in installation. This is not a performance part and is not affected by upgrades, however these can wear down and break. They are under tremendous tension due to holding the gear in place from the spring. There is no science about this particular component, either they break or they do not. A quality airsoft gun manufacturer should have a more than adequate anti reversal latch installed out of the box so replacing it with an upgrade is more based on your preference to do so rather than an urgent need to replace it with a reinforced unit.
