Q & A:
Q: When should I use a heavier BB?
A: On the heavier end of bb weight options you have choices such as .36g and .43g bb’s. These are ideal for bolt action sniper rifles, as you’ll want maximum wind resistance and accuracy. They feature a high-quality polish for maximum precision. These heavier bb’s may not work as well in some AEG’s, unless they have a modified hop up that can handle heavier rounds. Most AEG’s are designed out of the box to work best with .20g bb’s to .28g. There are many other weights available, but the ones I have listed are the most common.
The majority of airsoft bb's are much lighter than these specialty bb's, ranging from .20g to .28g. The primary advantage of using a heavier bb is a more consistent flight path, and therefore higher precision out on the field. This increased precision extends the effective range of your rifle by a large amount. While heavier bb's may seem like they will not fly as far in your rifle due to a decrease in velocity, this is definitely not the case. Heavier bb's have a much higher mass than their lighter counterparts, and this trait allows them to have a higher sustained energy throughout their flight. This higher energy is a result of the heavier bb's being much more resistant to air resistance. The higher sustained energy of these bb's also has a secondary effect: a much more noticeable impact, even at range. It can be very frustrating when shooting out to very long ranges, but people just aren't feeling or hearing your bb's impact because they've lost so much energy. These higher weight bb's, when paired with a high powered airsoft sniper rifle, can help to power your shots all the way through to the target and make sure that they feel it.
Q: When should I use a tracer bb?
A: First off, what are tracer bb’s? These bb’s are designed to glow in the dark, and typically come in either a red a green color. It’s important to note they don’t glow on their own very well, you’ll need a tracer unit which has a UV light inside of it. This essentially “charges” the tracer bb’s and gives them a laser like effect. For tracers, check out something like these acetech units to have a bright appearance from your ammo.
Q: How Do tracer units work?
A: Tracer units usually will come in the form of a mock suppressor and is attached to the end of your airsoft gun. You will need the mount it to a threaded barrel so mounting it in place of a flash hider or on your threaded pistol barrel would be the most ideal. Tracer units are battery powered and contain an internal sensor that detects when a BB is passing through the unit. Once a BB is picked up by this sensor, a flash of light is emitted internally, shining onto the BB as it exits the bore. With tracer BBs, this flash of light is enough to activate the glow in the dark material and you will see the BB travel for a distance. This gives the same effect as tracers used in real guns essentially. The tracer effect can aid you in tracking shots in pitch black conditions as well as help determine hits. These are very popular for CQB use as a result. Resourceful players sometimes use their flashlights in lieu of a tracer unit to activate the glowing agent.
