There are two components found inside a hop up assembly that directly interact with the BB as it is fired to produce the hop up effect. Those components are the hop up bucking and the nub. In an adjustable hop up unit, an arm is holding the nub in place and the arm pushes the nub to the bucking. This pressure combined with the friction of the rubber of the hop up bucking give the backspin effect. By default, most hop up nubs are a simple cylinder in shape and will be made from rubber or plastic. This provides adequate pressure on the bucking while having a little give as to not wear out and damage the bucking prematurely as its job is performed. A good BB should have a shape that provides accurate shots and provides responsive and consistent hop up. A high quality bucking and clean high quality inner barrel work with high quality BBs to give you the best accuracy.
Q: How long do nubs last? A: The hop up nub should last indefinitely. Q: What type of nub is best? A: Some schools of thought have brought about different types of nubs all in the name of attaining better accuracy. These nub types
might be named after the appearance that they take, such as H-nub because the nub is shaped like an H. There is no drop in solution
for what is universally the best and some experimentation might be in order. If your hopup is producing too much hop up regardless of
the setting and BB weight, your bucking and nub combination might be producing too strong of a hop up effect. Q: How long do buckings last? A: Generally the bucking should last for tens of thousands of rounds. This being a rubber component, be sure to condition it with 100% pure
silicon oil so it lasts longer. A bad bucking will usually result in poor feeding, jamming, multiple rounds being fed into the hop up chamber,
poor accuracy, and inconsistent or heavy losses in velocity. Q: What type of bucking is best? A: There are a wide variety of aftermarket hop up buckings all designed with the goal to increase range and accuracy. All of these take
different approaches such as using different rubber compounds, different shapes, and different rubber hardness. This creates as many
questions as the problems they aim to solve. Generally speaking, a softer bucking is ideal for lower velocity guns and a harder bucking is
ideal for higher velocity guns. The friction created from shooting a BB at a higher velocity through a soft bucking is enough to wear out
or tear the bucking prematurely. What generally comes equipped on a stock/unmodified airsoft gun is adequate for a wide variety of
velocity ranges however the accuracy may leave something to be desired. We try not to preach one brand over another as buckings
behave differently from one gun to the next and sometimes the most preached solution is only coming from a minority of people who
have a small sample of guns. If you need help upgrading your barrel and bucking, we offer tech services to repair and upgrade most
popular airsoft guns.
