The cylinder is a component found in the gearbox inside of an automatic electric gun (AEG). The cylinder in conjunction with the cylinder head acts as a chamber where the air that drives your BB is collected and forced out to propel your shot. When the piston is drawn back and released the piston head acts as a seal and pushes that air through the cylinder into the cylinder head out the air seal nozzle and into the BB. This component is a smooth metal cylinder that may or may not have ports in them. The amount of air volume needed to move the BB out of the barrel is calculated from the barrel length.
The length of your AEG barrel dictates whether or not your cylinder should have these ports. These ports bleed off air so that the air volume is matched to your AEG's barrel. AEG cylinders are commonly referred to by their types. The type is indicated by the location of the ports or lack of ports found on the cylinder. Installing the wrong cylinder type will result in substantial FPS loss and the gearbox is working harder to produce lower velocity than it has to. Cylinders can be made of brass, aluminum or other alloys. One important factor about having a consistently performing AEG is that the cylinder and cylinder head fit tightly and does not leak any air. Any air that could leak between these two components would result in an inefficiency in the compression and means your AEG is not attaining the velocity it is capable of.
If you need help with what cylinder you need or need tech work to install parts such as this, we offer tech services on most popular airsoft guns.

Q: What makes a good cylinder?
A: A good cylinder will have the correct porting matched to your barrel length and be smooth inside. Less friction as the piston assembly travels in it means your AEG will be more efficient and produce a more consistent velocity from shot to shot.
Q: What type of cylinder do I need?
A: If you are upgrading and swapping out your existing cylinder, match the exact port locations on your upgrade cylinder if you are not changing barrel lengths. Very rare situations would require you to switch to a cylinder with a port more forward (towards the nozzle side) so a careful understanding of air volume in a gearbox must be had otherwise this will counteract what you are trying to achieve. The porting type does not always have to be exact as it is somewhat forgiving if you use a similarly located ported cylinder in place of your original one.
Q: Do cylinders fail?
A: Cylinders will never fail unless they somehow become damaged by a piston breaking inside. This is exceptionally rare and so it is not likely you should ever have to replace the cylinder unless you want to change to a smoother one. You do not have to worry about this part failing and the main reason that people would change it is to increase efficiency.
