The cut off lever is a metal arm that is located inside the gearbox and is responsible for allowing your gun to shoot semi automatically in an AEG. It interacts with a selector plate which is manipulated by the external selector control of your AEG. Without this part, your gun will continue to fire repeatedly for as long as you hold the trigger. When you pull the trigger on your airsoft gun, the switch assembly opens the circuit from the battery to the motor. The motor turns the gears which drives the piston and forces the compressed air which fires your gun. The cut off lever is tripped by a cam on the sector gear and disconnects the sliding contact within the switch assembly, thus interrupting the completed circuit and allowing your gun to cycle exactly once on the trigger pull. When set to full auto, the cut off lever is disengaged and the gears are free to be driven for as long as you hold the trigger down. The external selector lever on your airsoft gun interacts with a selector plate that sits on the gearbox that you cannot see. The position of the selector controls the selector plate which positions the cut off lever for the desired mode.
Q: Why does my semi auto not work?
A: On an AEG that has been used for a while, this could be due to wear on the cut off lever itself or on the plastic portion of the sliding contact in the switch assembly which interacts with the cut off lever. On an AEG that is new or that you do not suspect it to be those two parts that are giving you problems, the next areas would be the selector plate or possible the sector gear being incompatible or off spec with regards to the cam that interacts with the cut off lever.
Q: How long does a cut off lever last?
A: A cut off lever should last tens of thousands of rounds before needing replacement. A cut off lever is not affected by upgrades to how hard your gun shoots so this is more of a part that you replace as you see as it is needed.
Q: Are there upgraded cut off levers?
A: While all AEGs will have a metal cut off lever, they are not all created equal. Some well made cut off levers will be made of steel and will last longer than ones made out of weaker alloys. Aftermarket steel upgrade cut off levers exist to be bought by themselves, however fitment of this component needs to be exact otherwise you might not get that semi auto function still. The cut off lever interacts with many parts and tolerances affect function greatly in this area.
Q: How do I know I have a bad cutoff lever?
A: Cutoff levers tend to wear out rather than break and that is signified by the gun being able to shoot and being able to continue shooting as you hold down the trigger rather than once per pull, even if you held the trigger down.
