The hop up chamber or hop up unit is the component inside the airsoft gun that holds the BB in place before being fired and provides the backspin (hop up effect) as it is fired to increase the overall range of the airsoft gun. A good airsoft gun will contain an adjustable hop up unit or a fixed hop up unit. An adjustable hop up unit allows you to utilize different BB weights and manipulate the amount of backspin you want to put on the BB as it is fired. Heavier BBs will require more backspin to retain level flight and lighter BBs will require less. A fixed hop up unit is not adjustable and is set for a specific BB weight. Though most manufacturers of these types of guns will specify a BB weight range, it is best to test a few weights and find what your airsoft gun likes best.
The mains components that go together with the hop up and barrel assembly will be the hop up unit, rubber hop up bucking, hop up nub, and inner barrel. Hop up units themselves will adjust via a system of gears or a dial and have an arm which moves up and down according to how you adjust it. The arm will hold in place the nub which is what will push the bucking. The bucking is what is physically touching your BB and producing that desired backspin. A bad bucking will result in multiple rounds entering the chamber, jamming, or poor FPS. Generally speaking, if your hop is working correctly, your gun is feeding correctly, and the hop up unit is not damaged, try not to change it. Every manufacturers specifications and tolerances may vary slightly and unless there is something wrong with your hop up chamber, you should not replace it outright. Hop up chambers from different brands could potentially play differently with your gun so it is best to go into replacing it with knowing you may have to do some custom fitting to ensure an aftermarket chamber works. That said, some of us like to change things for the sake of changing things in the name of upgrading so we totally get it too!
How does hop up work? Hop up is a term applied in airsoft where the gun puts backspin onto a BB as it is fired. This backspin uses what is known as the
Magnus effect or Magnus force and counteracts the forces of gravity and air as a projectile is flying. The backspin creates a lift
thereby increasing the range at which the projectile can travel before the forces of gravity and drag take over. What is better? A metal or plastic hop up chamber? Metal will certainly be more durable but it does not automatically mean better. A plastic hop up chamber should hold up indefinitely
and does not break on its own without things like poorly fitting magazines or improper installation contributing to it. A hop up
chamber should be graded on function before anything else. Your hop up chamber should: properly hop BBs, properly feed BBs
(as long as the magazines are working correctly), hold its adjustments, and aid to deliver consistent velocity.
