When it comes to shopping for M4 style airsoft magazines, you have two choices: mid capacity and high capacity magazines. Typically most new airsoft guns will include at least one high capacity magazine out of the box though sometimes it might be a mid cap instead. Also worth mentioning is the existence of low capacity magazines though these are a relic of the past but worth bringing up because the term mid and high cap exist. High capacity magazines work like big hoppers to feed BBs to your airsoft gun. The magazine body is hollow and contains a feeding system that needs spring tension to feed BBs up to the gun. This spring tension is provided by a spring that is tensioned when you wind a wheel at the bottom of the magazine.
After winding a sufficient number of times, the magazine will feed the BBs inside the magazine until the spring tension runs out, typically for 100 or more shots. A mid capacity magazine uses a totally different mechanism and works more like a real firearm magazine. You have a long spring pushing a follower which pushes BBs up into the gun. There is no extra steps or prep work to use a mid capacity magazine other than to load it initially using a BB loader. High caps are favored for their sheer capacity over mid caps but they do make noise as you are moving because BBs are moving around inside the magazine body. Mid caps are favored for the lack of noise and ease of use, as well as preferring to reload more frequently.
Your magazine choice is entirely up to you and should depend on your preferences. There is nothing in the book that says using a mid capacity magazine makes you a pro any more than using a high capacity magazine makes you a "noob".

Q: How many times should I wind a high cap magazine? A: As many times as needed until the clicking sound changes audibly to a different type of click, and you feel the tension in the wheel.
A big mistake new players make is not winding the magazine enough or winding just a handful of times and having their gun not feed.
This is not the fault of the gun but rather a lack of understanding that leads to players thinking their gun is not working. Before anything
else, wind the magazine adequately. Q: What is better? Mid caps or high caps? A That is an entirely subjective topic and is entirely up to what the player's priorities are. From a performance standpoint, both types of
magazines work about as well for their intended purposes. The only thing that might give mid capacity magazines a performance edge
would be when it comes to feeding guns that are upgraded for higher than normal rates of fire (30 rounds per second and up). Almost all
guns fall below that in stock form so mid capacity or high capacity magazines will work just fine to "keep up" with the gun. If a magazine
does not feed properly when pushed to those limits, it might not be a fault of the magazine but rather beyond the limits of what a magazine
should do without serious thought and redesign. For players who prefer something simple and economical, the high cap reigns supreme.
